CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

I sat in my truck, trying to sort through my thoughts. I’d never thought for one second my problem was depression. It just didn’t fit. But I’d enjoyed the way talking to Dr. Wellkut had eased some of the constant pressure I’d grown used to feeling, and I felt lighter than I had in weeks. I looked at my watch and saw it was almost time for Mike’s lunch break, so once I stared my truck and left the parking lot, I stopped at a Starbucks and pick up Mike’s and my favorite drinks.

When I walked into the lunchroom, he was sitting with a group of co-workers and he looked up, surprised. “Hi,” he said as he stood. His voice was happy, and as he pulled me into a hug, a tingle tracked down my spine. He’d always had that effect on me.

“Hey, guys.” I acknowledged the other guys sitting around the table as Mike and I stepped back from our hug. A chorus of “Hey, Annie,” filled the room, and I smiled. Turning to look at Mike again I added, “Since I was town, I figured I’d bring you coffee.”

He smiled down at me, then grabbed my hand and led me towards the door. “Let’s go outside.” Mike suggested, and I followed him out into the fresh air. “Thanks for the coffee.”

“You’re welcome. It’s been a while since I’ve brought you one. I haven’t been in town during the day much lately.”

“Well, you made my day. I’m glad you stopped. You look nice, by the way…what are you up to today?”

I hesitated. “I had my first appointment with Dr. Wellkut today. I’ve just come from there, actually.”

Mike took a long drink of his coffee, but didn’t say anything.

“She’s really nice. She’s an older lady and when I walked in, I was totally surprised because she looks like someone’s sweet little grandma. But she’s very grounded and she has this energy that instantly put me at ease, even though I was nervous…”

I forced myself to stop talking. Mike was watching me, a bemused smile playing on his lips. “You’re rambling.”

I laughed. “Still nervous, I guess.”

“Why?”

“Our last conversation about this didn’t end well, so I guess I wasn’t sure if you’d want to hear about my appointment.”

Mike shook his head, then reached for my hand. “I can disagree with you, and even get mad about things, but still want to hear about your day and your experiences, Annie. I know I was against you going, but that doesn’t mean you have to keep it from me.”

I squeezed his hand and sighed. “I guess I underestimated you. I thought you’d still be mad because I went.”

“I was mad when you brought it up. I admit that. I want you to be able to talk to me. But I also want you to be happy, and I want us to work. So if you think a counsellor will help you, then I guess I have to be supportive.”

“Thanks. That means a lot.” I squeezed his hand again, then he let go to check his watch.
